Statement from the CCDCC on Del. Fisher’s HB1158

CCDCC Statement on Delegate Mark Fisher’s HB1158, to insert the 1776 Commission Report into Calvert Schools

The Calvert County Democratic Central Committee supports the Maryland State Social Studies curriculum developed by professionals, reflecting factual information our students need as adults. Quality learning materials have been developed through research by state and county professionals with backgrounds in learning and child development.

The Calvert County Public Schools Equity Mission and the Policy Statement 1018 of the Board of Education Regarding Antiracism provide an atmosphere that recognizes historical unfairness and strives to correct it. Inclusion of the 1776 Report, a flawed document thrown together by a politically motivated commission would not serve our children well.

Suggestions that learning in an atmosphere that promotes equity is harmful to our students and that the Black Lives Matter movement is involved are wrong. We condemn the deliberate attempts to divide the citizens of Calvert County. The CCDCC supports the Calvert County Public Schools and believes that the teachers' union continues to bring the best and the brightest educators to our schools for our children.
