Calvert County Democratic Party
The Calvert County Democratic Central Committee expresses our sincere heartbreak at the passing of our Chair Emeritus, Mr. Hagner Mister. Hagner was a lifelong Democrat whose life is defined by service to his community.
He served his country as a member of the United States Army Reserves and Maryland National Guard. He also served as a member of the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners, the Calvert County Board of Education, the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland, as Secretary of Agriculture for the state of Maryland, and as a member of the Calvert County Democratic Central Committee, serving as Chair in 2011 and 2018, and honored as Chair Emeritus in 2020. He also worked with the Calvert County Farm Bureau, the Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation, the Calvert County Historical Society, the Calvert County Agricultural Preservation Advisory Board, Soil Conservation Society of America, as well as many more.
Hagner was truly an icon of Calvert County and an unparalleled leader who exemplified the gift of public service. In recognition of his outstanding public service, he received the R. Clayton Mitchell Jr. Award for Distinguished Public Service from Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot in 2020. He was a stalwart champion of agriculture, and protecting and preserving the Calvert County we all know and love. We were all so lucky to have had the chance to serve with him.
We extend our deepest condolences to Helen Ann, his three children, grandchildren and his family and friends. Hagner was a remarkable man with a great sense of humor who will be greatly missed. A farmer his entire life, let’s just say he grew the best sweet potatoes! Calvert County, and the entire state of Maryland has lost a true legend.
